Acts of God and of Man, that is the statement I have heard in the news about the recent events happening in our country specifically about the recent typhoons. Our country is simply not prepared to cope with natural disasters. Most of our politicians are still too busy bickering about each others mistakes while the people that they swore to serve are suffering.
The UN has made a study and have identified that the Philippines is one of the VERY hot spots for climate change. Ironically even with that fact, our country was the last to ratify the ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response. And just recently the signing into law of the Philippine Climate Change Act of 2009.
The deadly trio was pointed out that worsens natural disasters are poor urban government, unstable rural livelihood and ecosystem decline. Add to that the current coping capacity for hazard evaluation, structural defenses, early warning systems, emergency response, insurance and disaster funds and reconstruction and rehabilitation planning.
We have rich natural resources and yet we still continue to take them for granted. money wise, pro activism, preparation and prevention cost much less than re activism and rehabilitation. When can we have leaders who cannot only understand this simple concept and at the same time have some action to back his/her words up. We have more than enough laws already, its high time we implement them fully and properly not just for the public servants but also the citizens.
Even though these things are all in luzon, should we here in the visayas worry? Most Definitely, we must stop living in denial that such a situation won't happen to us here in cebu. We must urge our leaders here to be prepared and ready for any natural disaster that may strike our community.
